Burning Blade Tavern — Monster Hunters & Fire Shows in Dark Universe

Mounted monster trophies and tap handles at Burning Blade Tavern

If you are venturing into Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe, The Burning Blade Tavern is bound to catch your eye instantly. This walk-up, counter-service watering hole represents the headquarters for Darkmoor's local monster hunters. It's heavily themed, beautifully macabre, and functions as the perfect place to grab a horror-inspired bar bite and a stiff drink.

🔥 The Atmosphere & Showstopper Effect

The backstory of the tavern is directly tied to the fiery climax of the classic 1931 Frankenstein film. The hunters have retrofitted the old, partially destroyed mill into a pub.

  • The Windmill Pyro Show: The headlining feature happens outside. Multiple times an hour, the town bell tolls to warn of a monster sighting, kicking off a brief show where the giant windmill blades atop the tavern erupt into flames — visible even during the bright Florida day.
  • The Trophies Within: The interior is small, dark, and highly atmospheric, with stone walls and low candle-like lighting. Look behind the bar and you'll find the "trophies" of the monster hunters — the mounted, decapitated heads of various monsters they've tracked down.
  • Seating Reality Check: Indoor seating is incredibly limited to a handful of small corner tables and a large communal standing table. Most guests flow onto the outdoor patio alcove of long, shared wooden picnic tables.

🧟 The Food: Bar Bites with a Spooky Twist

The menu avoids heavy entrees, opting instead for quick, finger-food tavern fare that keeps prices relatively reasonable ($9 to $13).

  • Burning Cheddar Bites ($11.99): The undisputed star of the menu. Fried jalapeño pimento cheddar poppers that look entirely black — like chunks of charcoal — fitting the burnt theme perfectly. Wonderfully gooey inside with a perfect kick of heat, served with sriracha ranch.
  • Charred Loaded Potato ($11.49): A heavy, comforting hickory char-crusted potato loaded with melted Monterey jack cheese, sour cream, chives, and smoky jalapeño bacon.
  • Burning Blade Burger ($12.99): A straightforward, flame-broiled 4oz Angus patty topped with American cheese, caramelized onions, and jalapeño bacon — satisfying, reliable pub food.

The disappointment: the Hunter's Garlic Stake ($8.99) — a garlic-butter pretzel shaped like a vampire-slaying stake — looks incredible, but reviews note it's tough, dense, and stale-feeling. The garlic dipping sauce is excellent, though the pretzel itself can be a jaw workout.

🧪 The Drinks: Liquid Courage

Because this is a monster-hunting pub, the bar program is heavily emphasized, offering exclusive drafts and theatrical cocktails.

Darkthorne Mead: Brewed locally by Florida's Brewlihan — a stunning, deep neon-purple mead infused with blackcurrant, boysenberry, vanilla, and pink peppercorns. 12% ABV, but drinks incredibly smooth and sweet, like a spiced berry jam.
Reaper's Reserve: An exclusive dark brown ale from Crooked Can, heavily spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
Pure of Heart ($18): Whiskey, violet liqueur, crème de cassis, pineapple, and ginger beer, delivered with a dramatic table-side "smoke purification" presentation.
Hyde's Reagent (white test tube): Cazadores Añejo Cristalino tequila, Gran Gala, DeKuyper crème de cassis, Sūpāsawā, simple syrup, chipotle essence — very bitter.
Jekyll's Remedy (red test tube): New Amsterdam vodka, Bols peach schnapps, Sūpāsawā, cardamom and clove tinctures — very sweet.

⚔️ The Verdict: Magic or Tragic?

Magic (with an operational asterisk). The aesthetic execution of the Burning Blade Tavern is flawless; standing under a burning windmill drinking purple peppercorn mead is the exact kind of high-concept immersion Epic Universe promised.

Survival tip: the kitchen here is tiny, and ordering is heavily reliant on the Universal mobile app. Order your food before you even walk into the land to avoid long fulfillment delays, skip the hard pretzel in favor of the black cheddar bites, and secure a spot on the outdoor patio to catch the windmill burst into flames.

Universal-area bars pour strong drinks — as always, drink responsibly.
